Barcelona tired of Ousmane Dembele and asked him to leave immediately. The attitude was criticized by the Spanish Football Association.
Dembele’s contract expires at the end of the season. Initially, the Blaugrana were determined to keep the Frenchman, where the coach Xavi Hernandez had confirmed the player would be included in the plan.
However, several times a new contract offer from Barcelona was rejected by Dembele, who reportedly asked for a high contract value. It made the club hot.
Barcelona, through its director of football, Mateu Alemany, said the club was tired of offering Dembele a contract extension. He asked the player to leave immediately, until January 31, 2022, or when the winter transfer window closed.
Attitude Barcelona it was later denounced by the AFE [Asociación de Futbolistas Españoles atau Asosiasi Pesepakbola Spanyol]. The FIFPro-affiliated body asked Barcelona not to press Ousmane Dembele to terminate his contract.
“In light of the situation experienced by the FC Barcelona footballer Ousmane Dembele, the Spanish Footballers’ Association would like to convey the following,” the AFE statement read.
“The AFE considers signing an employment contract as a professional footballer obliging him to render his services on behalf of the club, following the instructions given to him.”
“On the other hand, the club is also obligated to pay the agreed wages, and to allow the provision of services under the same conditions as other team-mates, without any type of discrimination or pressure on the athlete to relinquish their employment rights,” the AFE statement said.
Dembele was bought by Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, for 105 million euros. Expected to be a replacement for Neymar, the 24-year-old player has been hit by many injuries.
Ousmane Dembele only has a record of 31 goals and 23 assists from 219 appearances. It has helped Barcelona won two LaLiga titles, two Copa del Rey titles and one Spanish Super Cup trophy.
