Five deaths have been reported in Denpasar, Bali’s capital. Four more fatalities occurred in the regions of Jembrana, Gianyar, and Badung. Eight bodies where recovered after a building collapsed at the kumbasari market in Denpasar.
“My house was flooded and we couldn’t go anywhere, we were entirely isolated until 3pm,” Denpasar resident Ni Made Anggraeni told *ABC*. “From yesterday morning to the morning of today, the rain never stopped. All my life living in Bali, this is the first time this happened. I am scared for sure, but we were lucky this morning, we were all awake … if we had been asleep, we had no idea ther would be a flood and we would have been carried away.”
Rescue crews are navigating inundated neighborhoods by boat and on foot to reach those stranded. Roads not affected by flooding are experiencing severe congestion as residents attempt to evacuate, and access to Denpasar’s international airport has been limited due to the traffic.
Denpasar local Ardiansyah told *ABC*: “I’m worried, I hope there would no longer be such a heavy rain like the one last night. I hope the Denpasar government will handle it soon … it’s never happened like this before.”
Indonesia, an archipelago nation, is prone to seasonal flooding, particularly during the rainy season. However, residents report this event is unprecedented in its scale.
