Bald to bountiful — how men are winning the fight against hair loss

men Increasingly Turn to At-Home Treatments in Fight Against Hair Loss, But Experts Warn of Risks

LONDON – A growing number of men are embracing readily available treatments for male pattern baldness (MPB), from online consultations and prescription services to over-the-counter sprays, but medical professionals are cautioning against self-diagnosis and highlighting potential side effects. The shift reflects a greater openness among men to address hair loss, but also raises concerns about adequate medical oversight.

For manny, the appeal lies in convenience and discretion.Services like Hair + Me allow customers to complete online questionnaires and submit photos to receive treatment options, often bypassing conventional doctor visits. One user, Aston, opted for minoxidil drops after reading about potential psychological and mental health side effects associated with oral medication. He found he “had good results” with the spray.

Though, experts warn that self-diagnosis can be problematic. “Men are self-diagnosing MPB based on online questionnaires,” says Christopher D’Souza, president of the British Association of Hair Restoration Surgery. “Hair shedding isn’t always MPB, so it’s better to have a consultation with a qualified healthcare practitioner before exploring treatment options, especially as many have risks of side-effects.”

Growing evidence links finasteride, an oral medication, to adverse side effects including depression, suicidal thoughts, and impotence. Minoxidil, often available as a topical spray, can cause irritation, dandruff, and unwanted hair growth in areas like sideburns and the forehead. Last year, regulators mandated that finasteride tablets include a safety alert card detailing potential psychiatric and sexual side effects, and advised patients to disclose any history of depression or suicidal thoughts to their prescriber.

The onus often falls on consumers to make responsible choices when purchasing from online pharmacies. Aston’s experience highlights a common scenario: carefully weighing options and selecting treatments based on perceived risk.

Another man, Costley, discovered his hair loss returned after discontinuing medication when his subscription lapsed. He has since resumed treatment but expressed regret for not being better informed about the long-term commitment. “I’m more nervous the second time around. I’d be disappointed if it didn’t grow back.”

The increasing accessibility of hair loss treatments offers hope for many, but experts emphasize the importance of professional medical guidance to ensure safe and effective care.
