Baker Mayfield is now a Carolina Panther

Star quarterback Baker Mayfield leaves the Cleveland Browns for the Carolina Panthers. The team announced on Wednesday. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero were the first to report it. In exchange for Mayfield, the Browns will reportedly get a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The deal is pending a medical check.

Browns and Panthers share Mayfield’s mega salary

Mayfield’s salary has reportedly stood in the way of a deal so far. The former first pick should earn $18.86 million this season. Cleveland will now pay Mayfield $10.5 million of the contract and Carolina another 5 million, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo. Mayfield agreed to forego the remainder of his salary.

Scandal quarterback Deshaun Watson comes to the Browns for Mayfield

As late as January, Cleveland was reportedly wanting to keep Mayfield. That, however, was before the team Skandal-Quaterback Deshaun Watson brought to Michigan. Immediately prior to the Watson trade, Mayfield formally asked the Browns for clearance.

Cleveland’s quarterback decisions didn’t come without exploring all options. It has been reportedthat both sides met at the Combine to discuss Mayfield’s future. However, the team were unwilling to commit to extending his contract until he fulfills his potential next season.

In addition to the Panthers, other NFL teams were also interested in Mayfield

In addition to the Panthers, the Seahawks and Texans were also interested in a Mayfield trade. Mayfield himself eyed the Colts, who chose Matt Ryan instead.

The Browns-picked Mayfield in the 2018 draft, after which the quarterback played a strong rookie season, including 27 passing touchdowns, and won the offensive Rookie of the Year pick.

Mayfield led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 in 2020, including a playoff win over the Steelers. However, Mayfield — in part due to a shoulder injury that required post-season surgery — had a poor 2021 season.
