Bahn is entering the final spurt for the construction projects in the Cologne transport hub

In the period between October 29 and November 2, work will be carried out on the commissioning of the new electronic interlocking “Cologne Central Station”. And work will also continue for the “Linker Rhein” electronic interlocking: DB experts will be building here from November 12th to December 10th. On November 2nd, the time has come: the first part of the new “Cologne Hauptbahnhof” electronic interlocking will go into operation. In the future, the S-Bahn traffic for the transport hub in Cologne will be controlled with the help of the most modern technology.

This year alone, DB is investing around 42 million euros in the construction of the two signal boxes. The electronic interlockings can be further developed as digital interlockings in the course of digitization: With the construction, DB is creating the prerequisites for the most modern technology at the Cologne hub.

The work will continue from November 12th to December 10th in Cologne-South. Extensive work on the infrastructure then takes place at night and on weekends. Here the DB is renewing more than 2500 meters of track and seven switches. The workers are exchanging almost 11,000 tons of ballast and 3,700 sleepers for this. Around 4.7 million euros will flow into the modernization in the Cologne-South area.

From December 10th to 19th, a new switch connection will be installed in the bridge apron of Deutz-Mülheimer Straße. In the future, this will enable more flexible operations management and additional travel options at Deutz train station. The first two bridges, which have been completely refurbished, should go into operation by the end of the year. The new construction of the five bridges over Deutz-Mülheimer Straße in the approach to the Deutz train station is a mammoth project: Overall, DB is realizing a construction volume of around 15 million euros here.

The construction work has different effects on long-distance, regional and S-Bahn traffic in the greater Cologne area in the respective construction phases. In order to impair passengers as little as possible, there are (partial) failures on the lines affected, especially during the night. During the day, rail customers, on the other hand, have to be prepared for canceled stops and diversions.

Another modernization project is the expansion for the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) between Cologne and Düsseldorf in the autumn holidays from October 8th to 22nd. The DB continues the underground and overhead line construction and sets another switch.

Overall, the DB construction program at the Cologne hub this year includes the modernization of 15 bridges and 35 kilometers of track. In addition, the DB experts lay more than 200 kilometers of cables, set 320 masts and drill 6,000 holes to probe explosives. In addition, they are building, among other things, four new modular buildings for the electronic interlockings, 40 points, 65 kilometers of cable ducts and around two kilometers of noise barriers.
