Bad Krozingen: Rethinking water supply in Bad Krozingen – far-reaching decisions made at the general meeting of the “Zweckverband Gruppewasserversorgung Krozinger Berg”.

Far-reaching decisions to secure the future of the drinking water supply and the economic efficiency of the provision of the water were on the agenda of the general meeting of the Zweckverband Gruppenwasserversorgung Krozinger Berg last week, which was also attended by Bad Krozingen’s Mayor Volker Kieber as Association Chairman and his Hartheim colleague Stefan Ostermaier as Deputy Chairman for a further five years were confirmed in office.

“Our strategic and therefore political goal must be to secure and expand as much as possible the proportion of private water supply in the associated municipalities. In order for this to succeed, investments must be made in the existing infrastructure and its future use must be adapted in order not least to adapt as well as possible to the effects of climate change that are already being felt.” The representatives of the cities and municipalities agreed on this Bad Krozingen, Hartheim, Heitersheim and Staufen agreed. The main focus was on the rehabilitation and hydromechanical regeneration of the association’s own deep wells Tunsel I and II as well as the deep well Bremgarten and the associated new application for water rights with an increase in the withdrawal volume for the wells. The drinking water reserve deep well in Bremgarten, which was shut down due to the high nitrate levels, is also to be used for agricultural irrigation in the future. There is already close positive coordination with the district office of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.

“A paradigm shift is taking place here and we have to rethink the water supply,” stated the chairman, Volker Kieber. “Whereas up to now it was only possible to use a deep well either only for the drinking water supply or only for the provision of irrigation water, we now have the technical prerequisites to ensure dual use without jeopardizing the requirements for the drinking water supply. As an association, we see our responsibility not only in the provision of drinking water.

Farmers, who have long felt the effects of global warming, also need our support. A first and important step here is to offer the Bremgarter well to farmers for sprinkling after it has been thoroughly renovated, provided they can demonstrate the need for it. In the future, however, it will be even more important to work together with the farmers on solutions, which also includes a more efficient irrigation strategy,” says Volker Kieber, describing the new challenges.

The water law permit for the existing deep wells Tunsel I and II in the district of Tunsel currently runs until December 31, 2022. The renovation work for the 55-year-old deep well I has already been largely completed. The planning/investigation for the renovation of the 46-year-old TB II tunnel and the TB Bremgarten were awarded to the planning office Fritz GmbH, Freiburg. The prerequisite for the provision of water for agricultural irrigation from the TB Bremgarten is a proof of need and a corresponding water law permit for the irrigation areas on the part of the farmers.

The special purpose association for group water supply in Krozinger Berg:
The cities of Bad Krozingen, Heitersheim and Staufen as well as the municipality of Hartheim have formed a special-purpose association called “Group Water Supply Krozinger Berg”. The task of the association is to ensure the drinking water supply for the municipalities involved and to operate it economically.

The association plans, builds, operates and maintains the joint water extraction and supply systems:
– the main pumping station Tunsel with deep wells I and II,
– the Bremgarten pumping station with a deep well,
– the intermediate pumping station Erlenmatten,
– the elevated tanks Krozinger Berg I, II and III,
– the Steiner intermediate tank on the Staufen district (without pumping equipment),
– the penstocks up to the local networks.

The association was founded in 1964. The association’s area includes the district areas of the city of Staufen, the municipality of Hartheim with the districts of Bremgarten and Feldkirch, the district of Gallenweiler from the city of Heitersheim and the city of Bad Krozingen with the district of Tunsel (including Schmidhofen). The Biengen district is supplied by the Möhlin Group water supply association. The district of Schlatt has its own spring.

The association initially obtained its water exclusively from its own deep wells near Tunsel and Bremgarten, but in 1985 it was connected to the Hausen waterworks operated by badenova, which has been supplying around 98% of the water to the association since 2007. The higher nitrate values of the Tunseler deep well could be compensated for by the geologically lower-lying aquifer of the Hausen deep well. The use of the disused deep well in Bremgarten as a drinking water well has not been possible for several years due to the very high nitrate levels. Together with engineering offices and committed farmers, the association is working on getting regionally adapted, effective and implementable instruments for nitrate reduction in groundwater off the ground. All three wells also serve as a drinking water reserve (emergency supply) in the event of an accident in the Hausen waterworks and ensure an emergency water supply via central withdrawal points.
