Ernst Thurn celebrates his 80th birthday on August 25th. He was born in Euerdorf, where he also spent his youth.
After school he learned the shoemaker’s craft from Kaspar Bocklet in Bad Kissingen, Spitalgasse 11. In 1962 he took over the workshop. To be able to run a master craftsman business, he passed his master craftsman examination in Wrzburg in 1964. The shoemaker’s shop moved to the “Neue Schloss” Spital-Ecke-Maxstrae in 1972 and was expanded and enlarged at the same time. Comfortable shoes, boots and sandals for women, men and children were also offered.
In the same year he attended advanced training courses for orthopedics and medical shoe insoles in Wrzburg.
At the age of 33 he was elected head master of the shoemaker’s guild for the Bad Kissingen district. He exercised this office with passion until it was dissolved in 1997, whereupon he was awarded the Golden Craftsman Seal.
In his free time he loved skiing, which brought him to Slden in Austria almost every year. In 1986 he joined the Rhnklub Bad Kissingen and discovered his passion for mountain hiking here. He took part in many hikes, for which he received numerous honors and awards. His pride was and is the awarding of “The green ribbon of the Rhn”.
Actively packed
When working at the Kissinger Htte he was always on site, whether it was roof repairs, house painting, mowing … whatever happened, he was always there.
At the Rakoczy Festival, the Rhnklub has its booth at the fire tower, and there it helped with the construction, then participated in the drinks bar until late at night and even when it was being dismantled, he was still there with full enthusiasm. Before his 50th birthday, he fulfilled two long-awaited wishes and climbed the Wildspitz (3774m) in Austria. He hiked the Europaweg from Obersdorf over the Alps to Merano with a backpack.
He was also a board member of the fruit and horticultural association in Reiterswiesen for many years. On Corpus Christi it was a matter of course for him to carry the canopy through the pedestrian zone in Bad Kissingen to the spa garden during the procession.
Time to meet and hike
Since January 2000 his son Dieter has taken over the shoe business. Now Ernst Thurn also has time to take part in the senior meetings at the volunteer fire brigade in Reiterswiesen, which gives him great pleasure.
His son Wolfgang runs “Germany’s oldest trout farm” in Grfendorf. And here he likes to stay from Tuesday to Friday to look after the animals (rabbits, sheep, chickens and birds) and he enjoys the beautiful nature there on short hikes.
