France introduces a new health policy on contraception for young women.

From next year, birth control pills will be offered free of charge to French women under the age of 25. Examinations, tests and medical procedures related to birth control will also be free of charge.

“There is a decline in the use of contraceptives by young women and the main reason for this is financial. It is unacceptable for women not to be able to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies because they do not have the means, “French Health Minister Olivier Veran was quoted as saying by bTV.

Asked why the government has decided to cover the program only for women under 25, Veran said that those over that age are now self-employed, working and have health insurance. He added that according to statistics, women are thinking of having children after the age of 25.

According to him, women over this age will also receive state support. 65% of the contraceptive costs will be reimbursed.

The program will cost the French health authorities approximately 21 million euros a year. Since 2013, girls between the ages of 15 and 18 in France are entitled to free contraception.

Authorities said it was because of the program that abortions among this age group had been kept to a minimum over the past seven years.
