Baba Garage health post: giving birth at home, the new trend

The Covid-19 pandemic has a negative impact on the daily lives of patients. Most of them are reluctant to go to health facilities. The consequences are multiple and serious. At Baba Garage, the Covid-19 has resulted in under-employment and an increase in home births.

Covid-19 is much more than a health crisis; it keeps patients away from health facilities. Most refuse to go for consultation because they are afraid of catching the virus there. This is the case at Baba Garage, in the department of Bambey. In this locality, women who have reached term are afraid of going to health facilities. Consequence: home births are trendy. For three months, there has been an exponential curve in this practice. These deliveries are in the order of 10 per month, reveals Nafissatou Sagna, the midwife of the state health post at Baba Garage.

Dangers in state

The midwife insisted that these home births affect the health of the woman and the child. They are sometimes linked to a lack of means of transport. Many women are thus forced, due to lack of means of transport, to give birth at home. Tragedies are seen: sometimes babies die or end up with lesions. Women give birth at home and are then examined, others do not. There are some who do not do prenatal consultations and suffer afterwards from hemorrhages, anemias and other infections.

Decryption

Cultural factors explain these home births. The mothers-in-law decide everything in rural areas and impose their diktat on their daughters-in-law. Home birth remains a major cause of maternal and newborn death in Senegal.
