Azerbaijani lawmakers call for exclusion of France from Karabakh mediation group leadership / Day

The upper house of the French parliament adopted a non-binding resolution on Wednesday calling on France to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state.

In a resolution adopted on Thursday, Azerbaijani lawmakers called on the government to ask the OSCE to remove France from the leadership of the so-called Minsk Group.

France, Russia and the United States are co-chairs of this group, which has been negotiating for years for a solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but has failed to make any progress.

Azerbaijani lawmakers also urged the government to review “political and economic relations” with France.

A “dirty political campaign against Azerbaijan” was held in the French Senate, and Azerbaijani lawmakers had to react, said parliamentary speaker Sakhar Gafarova.

Armenian Prime Minister Nicholas Pashinyan praised the French resolution, calling it historic.

On November 9, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the support of Russia, reached an agreement on a ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The agreement stipulates that Armenians will lose part of the main territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as all areas of the security buffer zone that have been under Armenian control since the 1990s.

The future political status of Nagorno-Karabakh remains uncertain even after the agreement is reached.

So far, the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh has not been recognized by any country, not even by Armenia, which provides all possible support to Nagorno-Karabakh.

Nagorno-Karabakh, which was part of the Azerbaijani SSR during the Soviet era, has been a “de facto” independent Armenian republic since the early 1990s. Although Azerbaijan has not controlled Nagorno-Karabakh since the collapse of the USSR, it considers the Armenian region to be its territory.
