Azerbaijan claims conquests in Nagorno-Karabakh battle

Azerbaijan says it has taken a city and a number of villages in the battle for Nagorno-Karabakh. It is said to be the city of Madagiz, which is located on Azerbaijani territory, but is controlled from Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia has not confirmed the conquest. The Armenian Defense Minister said yesterday that there is fierce fighting “all along the front line” and that Armenian forces have downed three planes. The latter is contradicted by Azerbaijan.

To lose

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has a long history. The battle erupted last week back on. Armenia says the battle on the Azerbaijani side has claimed 2,400 lives. Azerbaijan does not want to name a number. The Nagorno-Karabakh administration says it has lost 150 fighters.

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged war over Nagorno-Karabakh in the early 1990s. A ceasefire was agreed in 1994, but the truce has been breached several times. That happened for the last time in 2016, when about a hundred people were killed on both sides. The area is not internationally recognized as independent.
