Avia stopped producing trucks after 74 years

“Avia itself currently has a dozen employees, but some of the employees moved to the sister company Truck Service Group, which participates in providing services for users of Avia vehicles,” Andrej Čírtek, a spokesman for the Czechoslovak Group, which owns the Přelouč car manufacturer, told Práva.

According to Čírtek, the project of electric trucks was prepared for several months. “It is now frozen and it is not currently being discussed with an English partner who would take part in it,” Čírtek added. A coronavirus pandemic is also involved.

At the moment, Avia is mainly engaged in the trade of spare parts and, according to Čírtek, retains its custom production capacity, which can be used in the future depending on the market situation.

“It also provides homologations for avii users so that this vehicle can serve them effectively for many years to come. Avia is also of value to us as a traditional Czech brand, and in the future it is possible that we will use it in an area other than automotive, “said the company’s spokesman.

The Czechoslovak Group bought the then Letňany car manufacturer Avia in 2016 and tried to resurrect it. It invested in the creation of a new production line in Přelouč, East Bohemia, and for a while still retained the ability to produce small trucks. This year, however, production has stopped and due to the necessary new homologations, small series production will no longer pay off.

“Avia still has the ability to piece produce special vehicles on 4×4 and 4×2 chassis as well as produce spare parts. In addition, we keep stocks of spare parts that will ensure the operation of the fleet of aircraft on the roads throughout the life of the vehicles, “assured Čírtek.

Avia was founded in 1919, when it was an aircraft manufacturer. The company began manufacturing trucks after the war in 1946. In the 1980s, production reached 19,000 cars per year. At the turn of the millennium, however, there was a decline and several Prague owners took turns in Letňany, Prague, including the South Korean Daewoo concern or the Indian company Ashok Leyland.

Last year, Avia celebrated its centenary in the hands of the Czechoslovak Group industrial holding company, of which it has been a part since 2016. A year later, it even introduced the new Avia Initia model. But now the production of cars is coming to an end.
