Council Demands Aleida Remove Beloved Front Garden

by Emma Walker – News Editor December 6, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Beloved Garden Faces Demolition Order After Years of Cultivation

BALLARAT, AUSTRALIA – A Ballarat woman’s meticulously maintained front⁤ garden, a labour of love spanning four decades, is at risk of being torn down following repeated complaints about pedestrian access. ‌Aleida, a local resident, has spent years ⁤cultivating a vibrant display of flowers, stones, and‍ grass, cherished‌ by her neighbours. However, the City⁣ of Ballarat⁤ is now requesting she clear the garden to ensure a 1.5-metre clear path along⁤ the nature strip.

The dispute highlights⁣ a growing tension between residents’ desire ‌for beautiful, biodiverse frontages and the‌ council’s responsibility ⁤to ⁣maintain safe public access. While acknowledging Aleida’s⁢ dedication and the aesthetic value of her garden, the council states ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety – dating back‍ to 2002 – prompted the request. Community members have reportedly been forced to walk on the road ⁤due to obstructed pathways, raising visibility issues for motorists.

For 40 years, Aleida has devoted hours each⁢ day to her garden, treating every element with care. The ⁢council ‍initially inspected the property due to “repeated formal ⁢complaints” regarding⁢ unsafe pedestrian access. According to a statement released by the City of Ballarat, the complaints centered⁢ on the inability to safely navigate the nature strip without stepping onto the road.

The ⁤council’s recently adopted Nature Strip Garden Guidelines prioritize safety alongside green spaces, aiming to ensure clear access for pedestrians, vehicles, and essential services. The‍ council has been in ⁢ongoing conversations with Aleida for years, encouraging her to comply with the pathway width requirement.

“We ⁢are empathetic towards Aleida’s situation⁣ as we can see⁣ the love and care she has put into her landscaping,”⁤ the council statement reads. ”Though, it is indeed vital that nature strips and pathways remain accessible ⁢to everyone.” The council ⁣has ⁤indicated it will withdraw any fines issued if Aleida carries out the necessary access improvements.

-title Trump Awarded FIFA’s Peace Prize Amid Controversy

by Emma Walker – News Editor December 6, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Trump‌ Awarded FIFA Peace Prize Amidst Controversy

FIFA President Gianni Infantino heralded the⁤ upcoming 2026 World Cup as “unique, stellar,⁢ and impressive” at ⁣a recent ceremony, while together presenting its inaugural peace prize to former U.S. President Donald Trump. The men’s World Cup is scheduled⁣ to run from june 11 to July 19,2026,featuring⁢ a record 104 matches across 16 host cities. The tournament will begin with a match between ⁢Mexico and South Africa at the⁣ Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, followed by a game between⁣ South Korea and a playoff winner. The US and Canada will join ‍the competition the following day.

However, the award ceremony was quickly overshadowed by ⁤scrutiny ⁤surrounding FIFA’s new prize and the rationale ⁢behind Trump’s selection. FIFA announced the⁢ annual peace ⁣prize in November, stating it would honor “individuals who ‌have taken exceptional and extraordinary‍ actions for peace.” A video played before the presentation claimed Trump had resolved the ⁤war in‍ gaza and was working to end Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The trophy itself, a gold-plated globe ⁢supported by upraised hands, was notably larger than the Nobel Peace Prize medal. Trump also received a⁤ medal, which he wore as Infantino praised him ‌for‍ “promoting peace and unity⁣ around⁢ the ⁤world.”

Trump accepted the award, stating, “Thank⁤ you very much.‍ This is truly one of the great honours of my life. And beyond⁣ awards, Gianni and I were discussing this, we saved millions and millions of lives…The world is ⁤a safer place now.” He further asserted that the US was “not ‍doing too⁤ well” before his presidency, but is now “the hottest country anywhere in the world.”

Earlier, Trump told reporters he didn’t ”need prizes,” but ‌claimed to have “settled eight wars” within his first 10 months in office. “I‍ don’t need prizes. I need to save lives,” he said. “I saved ⁢millions‍ and millions of lives, and that’s‍ really what I want to do.”

This claim of ending eight wars has been widely disputed, with significant work remaining to resolve⁢ conflicts, including the ongoing ‍conflict in Gaza, that Trump claims to have ended.

The award comes as Trump⁣ faces criticism⁢ for increasing US ⁢military presence around Venezuela, authorizing air‍ strikes‌ against suspected drug-smuggling boats, and implementing a strict‌ immigration crackdown.⁢ This crackdown includes threats to relocate World Cup games from⁢ cities where troops have been deployed and a freeze on asylum decisions from 19 countries,⁤ including World Cup participants Haiti and Iran. Furthermore, Trump recently faced backlash for referring to Somali immigrants as⁣ “garbage.”

Concerns have also been raised ⁤regarding the lack⁢ of transparency surrounding FIFA’s peace prize. Human Rights Watch (HRW) has requested facts from FIFA regarding nominees, judges, criteria, and the‌ selection process, but has yet to receive ⁤a response.

Minky Worden of HRW stated, “FIFA’s‍ so-called peace prize is being ‌awarded ⁣against a⁢ backdrop of ‌violent ⁤detentions of immigrants, national guard deployments in US cities, and the obsequious cancellation of‌ FIFA’s own anti-racism ⁤and anti-discrimination campaigns.”

Sudanese paramilitary attack kills 50, including 33 children : NPR

by Emma Walker – News Editor December 6, 2025
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

A Sudanese ⁣paramilitary attack on ‌Sunday resulted in the deaths of⁤ at least 50 people, including ‍33 children, in the⁣ town of Kauda, South Kordofan. The strikes, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces⁤ (RSF), represent a meaningful escalation in the ‍ongoing conflict and‌ raise fears of further atrocities mirroring ‌those recently seen⁢ in el-Fasher.

The escalating violence‌ in Sudan threatens to destabilize the entire ‍region and exacerbate an already ⁢dire humanitarian crisis. The⁢ conflict, which began in April 2023 between‍ the RSF and the Sudanese military, has claimed ⁢over 40,000 lives and displaced more than ‌12 million people, according to the World Health Organization. Aid organizations caution that the actual ⁢death toll is highly likely far greater. ⁢

UN Human Rights chief Volker ⁣Türk has warned that ⁣south Kordofan⁣ coudl experience atrocities similar to those committed in el-Fasher, were the RSF’s recent takeover was marked by widespread executions of civilians, sexual violence, and other severe human rights ⁣abuses. Thousands fled ‌el-Fasher following the ‌RSF’s advance, ‌while countless others remain‍ trapped within ⁢the city, their fate‌ uncertain.

The fighting stems from a power struggle between the RSF and the ‍Sudanese military. The conflict‌ has disrupted ⁤essential services, crippled the⁤ economy, and pushed Sudan to the brink of collapse. The international community is urging both sides to cease hostilities and engage in meaningful negotiations‌ to restore peace and stability. ⁢However, prospects for a swift resolution remain bleak as both ⁤factions ‍appear entrenched in their positions.
