Austrian woman killed in shark attack in Red Sea

The woman is said to have lost an arm and a leg in the attack. She is said to have married an Egyptian and lived in Hurghada on the Red Sea.

Rare occurrence

Tourists were able to watch the tragic event from the beach and from a jetty. A video of the incident shows the woman trying to get to safety in red-colored water. Meanwhile, men on the jetty try to pull her out of the water with a rope.

The Egyptian authorities have closed part of the coast for three days, reports AP news agency. All activities in the sea are prohibited. These include swimming, diving, snorkeling and kite surfing. Fishing boats are also not allowed to enter the water for the next few days.

Rarely occurs

The Red Sea is a popular destination for snorkelers and divers, among others. Deadly shark attacks are rare. In 2018, a tourist from the Czech Republic died, as did a German in 2015 and a retired German in 2010.
