Austrian Music Theater Award honored Placido Domingo in Salzburg

He received a standing ovation for an emotional acceptance speech. The award filled him with pride and gratitude, explained Domingo, who had traveled again for the first time after his Covid 19 illness. He is already looking forward to seeing you again at the Vienna State Opera in September.

Domingo: “Lockdown has shown our fragility”

“The months of lockdown showed us our fragility,” said the artist. But you would also have grown your inner strength. The awarding of the Austrian Music Theater Prize is therefore an important signal in a difficult time.

In order to minimize the risk of infection, the event took place in the open air at Terminal 2 of Salzburg Airport – with a view of the runway and the fortress. The corona-related distance keeping took a back seat due to the joy of finally meeting again in large groups after the months of isolation. It was a hug and a handshake, as if the virus had never existed.

2020 an exceptional year

In this exceptional year in particular, it was important to award the award and to offer the artists a stage, said tenor Karl-Michael Ebner, who initiated the award in 2013: “Covid-19 has made the country’s stages go dark but not unplugged. We all burn with enormous energy to return to the stage, “said Ebner.

The opera singer Günther Groissböck, who was awarded the media prize, also took the same line. “The price is a signal that there is now a spirit of optimism and new drive in the music scene,” said Groissböck to APA.

Pianist Claudia Land receives special price

The special prize for international cultural engagement was awarded to pianist Claudia Yang, who – like many other artists – was unable to attend the award ceremony due to travel restrictions. The Bruckner Orchestra Linz was recognized as the best orchestra. For the first time, a special prize for the best youth and children’s music theater production was awarded, which went to “Land of Smiles for Children” at the Mörbisch Lake Festival.

Music theater award with 15 special awards

The five special prizes complemented the 15 regular categories in which “Golden Schikaneder” statuettes were awarded. Ursula Pfitzner was honored as the best female leading role for her duchess in “Powder her face” at the Volksoper Vienna. Gabor Bretz received the award for the best male lead role as Don Quixote at the Bregenz Festival.

The productions “König Roger” at the Graz Opera, “Liliom” at the Tiroler Landestheater and “Don Quichote” in Bregenz each received prizes in two categories. Most of the awards went to the Landestheater Linz with four statuettes, and the Volksoper Vienna received three statuettes.

The off-theater award went to Scharmien Zandi for “Amour Fou”. “I am very happy that such signals are needed for the young generation,” said the artist. The team in the production “Stillhang” with composer Christian Spitzenstaetter and actress Isabel Karajan cheered most enthusiastically about the award for the best first or first performance. The opera was premiered at the Erl Festival
