Europe seems to be getting its way after it put Austria under heavy pressure to keep the ski slopes closed until at least after the Christmas holidays, as in Germany, France and Italy.

The Austrian government – which strongly opposed such a ski ban – announced a number of relaxation on Wednesday after a hard lockdown. But according to almost all Austrian media, it is already clear that hotels and restaurants in the Austrian ski stations must keep their doors closed at least until the beginning of January. The ski stations and lifts are allowed to open but only for people from the region.
Italy and Germany in particular strongly urged the closure of the Austrian ski stations, for fear of the rampant corona virus. But Austria – for whom ski tourism is just as important as the car industry for Germany – did not want to know about it. In response, Italy and Germany threatened to prevent their residents from traveling to Austrian ski resorts during the Christmas holidays. Prime Minister De Croo (Open VLD) also explicitly asks Belgians not to go skiing this year.
