Australian rescuers are trying to help hundreds of stranded whales. They only have a chance for a few days – ČT24 – Czech Television

Rescuers have to act very quickly, experts estimate that if a hundred whales survive, it will be a great success. However, the work is complicated by cold, the frequent alternation of tide and low tide, as well as the size of marine mammals. Roundheads measure up to seven meters, their weight is four and a half tons.

Those involved in rescuing whales say they have had to come to terms with the fact that they cannot save many whales. They consider victory as any individual who manages to return to the high seas. They have already helped several cetaceans, mainly thanks to the assistance of fishermen and their boats.

Rescue can be complicated by the wailing of a stranded herd

It takes several hours to rescue a whale. Rescuers have to tighten the belt under a few tons of animal and tighten the loop, which then needs to be attached to one of the fishing vessels. However, they definitely do not win even when the whale finds itself in deeper waters. Some individuals tend to return to other stranded whales as soon as they hear their cries.

About 160 mammals, which are in shallow water near the port of Mekvaria, have a chance of survival until about Saturday. After that, the level should drop even lower, which can be fatal for whales.
