Daniil Medvedev: The way to the semi-finals
Medvedev is already playing his best Australian Open – so far it was only enough for the Russian for the round of 16. At the beginning Medvedev celebrated two clear victories before he afforded his first insecurities on lap three.
Against Filip Krajinovic, he initially led easily 2-0 in sets, but then gave up two sets and first had to go into the decisive set in this tournament. There he showed no nakedness and moved into the round of 16 with a 6-0 in the fifth set.
Mackenzie McDonald, waiting there, was no threat to Medvedev. In the end there was a clear 6: 4, 6: 2, 6: 3 on the score sheet. In the quarter-finals he finally faced his compatriot Andrey Rublev, whom he swept off the court with an impressive performance. In three sets (7: 5, 6: 3, 6: 2) Medvedev won the duel and got stronger with each set.
Stefanos Tsitsipas: The way to the semi-finals
Unlike Medvedev, Tsitsipas had to sweat in the second round and go the full distance against the Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. In the decisive set he made it into the third round with a 6: 4.
There he celebrated a clear three-set win over the Swede Mikael Ymer (6: 4, 6: 1, 6: 1) before he had a bye against the Italian Matteo Barrettini in the round of 16, as he gave up injured in the run-up to the game had to.
In the quarter-finals there was a big showdown against Rafael Nadal. After a 2-0 deficit against the Spaniard, it already looked as if Tsitsipas’ dream of his third Grand Slam semi-final was about to burst. Then, however, he secured set three in the tie-break and then played completely free. In the end he made the sensation perfect with a 7: 5 in the decisive set.
