Australians Can Now Access National anthem and Citizenship Pledge in Multiple Languages
CANBERRA – In a move to foster inclusivity and celebrate Australia’s multiculturalism, the national anthem, “Advance Australia Fair,” and the Australian Citizenship Pledge are now readily available in a wide range of languages, thanks to resources provided by SBS.The initiative aims to ensure all new citizens and residents can fully participate in and understand the significance of these key national symbols.
As australian citizenship was formally introduced in 1949, over six million people have become citizens thru official ceremonies. These ceremonies, frequently enough organized by local councils and marked annually on Australian Citizenship Day (September 17th), include the playing of the national anthem and the recitation of the citizenship pledge. Recognizing the diverse linguistic backgrounds of Australians, SBS has created a platform where both the anthem and pledge can be read and listened to in numerous languages.
The Australian Citizenship Pledge has two versions, one including the phrase “under God” and a secular choice. Both versions are available through the SBS resource.
The Pledge reads:
With God:
“From this time forward, under God,I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.”
Without God:
“From this time forward, I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.”
