An Australian man, Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, faces a possible jail sentence of up to five years for allegedly assaulting a fisherman on the Indonesian island of Simeulue. Risby-Jones is said to have gone on a drunken, naked rampage that involved chasing and striking people after leaving a resort. Police allege that he hit a security guard before attacking the fisherman. The fisherman reportedly required more than 50 stitches and suffered fractures. Risby-Jones says he felt almost possessed and was not himself during the incident. Aceh province, where the incident took place, is the most morally conservative province of Indonesia and is the only province where Islamic sharia law can be applied. If sentenced, Risby-Jones would likely be charged under article 351 for maltreatment resulting in physical injury. He could also face charges for drinking alcohol, which is banned under sharia law. Bali, another popular Indonesian island, has also had tensions between locals and visitors escalate recently.
