Australia: surfer killed by shark

A surfer died after being attacked by a three-meter shark off a busy beach on Australia’s east coast, police said Sunday.

The man was surfing at Kingscliff, a hundred miles south of Brisbane, Sunday morning when the shark grabbed him in the leg. “Police were informed that several surfers came to his rescue and chased the shark before the injured man was transported to shore“the police said in a statement. “First aid was administered to him to treat his left leg which presented serious injuries but he died on the spot”, continued the police.

She said the victim had not been officially identified, but was believed to be a 60-year-old resident of Queensland. It is the third known fatal attack of a shark in Australia since the beginning of the year. The country is one of those where the attacks of sharks are the most frequent but they are rarely fatal. According to the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, in 2019 there were 27 attacks in Australia, none of which were fatal.
