Aunt May Almost Wasn’t In Spider-Man Because She’s ‘Too Wrinkly’

Insomniac Games hate old people!! Okay, that’s going a bit too far, but Aunt May’s age was almost reason enough for the game developer not to put her in Marvel’s Spider-Man. When the devs designed the game for the PS4, they were concerned that they couldn’t create a realistic older character (at least not without taking off the console).

Turns out, wrinkles are damn hard to make look natural. As a result, Insomniac was equally afraid that they could not realistically shape Aunt May, while she still has a fairly important role in the story. The solution would be to just use her voice, which would be heard on the radio and over the phone.

According to Slott, “wrinkly characters” are extra difficult to create, taking about five times as long as creating a uhh… non-wrinkly character. Due to Slott’s insistence, Insomniac finally gave in after much deliberation, he tells GamesRadar. He made it a point that Aunt May really had to be in the game herself, and that she didn’t have to be that old to be a good May.
