Augsburg Launches New City App for Enhanced Citizen Services
The City of Augsburg has released a new mobile request designed to provide residents with easy access to municipal information and services. The app consolidates a range of features, aiming to simplify daily life and enhance the city’s digital offerings.
Users of the ”Today” tab can quickly find current opening hours for municipal facilities, including swimming pools, ice rinks, the Botanical Garden, libraries, and museums. A dedicated news section delivers city-wide warnings and updates, customizable by topic and district, with optional push notifications for timely alerts.
The app also features a “Live” section offering real-time data, such as parking garage occupancy in the city centre, tram departure times at specific stops, and a live view of the town hall square.
Beyond information access, the app includes a “Cards” section allowing users to digitally store their Augsburger Sportcard and library card for streamlined access to facilities. The city plans to expand this functionality with additional digital map features and applications in the future.
Built on the open-source Smart Village application platform, the Augsburg app leverages existing content from the city’s website, including its AI-powered chatbot for 24/7 citizen support. Horst Thieme, head of the Smart City office, emphasized the benefits of this approach: “By using open source technologies and working closely with a strong community of other municipalities,we avoid duplicate data structures and reduce technical effort in the long term.” he highlighted the app’s efficient use of existing smart city data as a resource-saving measure.
The app is free to use, requires no registration, and does not collect phone numbers. It is designed to be ad-free and accessible, with clear information provided regarding data usage for any forms requiring personal information.
Mayor Eva Weber stated the app reinforces Augsburg’s position as a leader in digitized citizen services in bavaria. Economics officer Wolfgang Hübschle added that the app is a key step towards becoming a smart city, enhancing quality of life and attracting businesses, skilled workers, and founders through improved digital infrastructure and service quality.
The City of Augsburg app is now available for both iOS and Android devices.
