Audi RS6 Gto: the homage to history becomes a racing wagon

A fascinating exercise in style by the Neckarsulm Audi Akademie which built a model inspired by the legendary 90 Imsa Gto of 1989. Here are the photos

Giving space to young people often gives surprises, even in the automotive sector. Inspired by the Skoda Academy projects, Audi allowed the students and apprentices of the Neckarsulm Audi Akademie to develop a concept from scratch. Evidently they had fun, as a prototype – RS6 Gto – was born with a gritty and flashy look to celebrate 40 years of quattro all-wheel drive and commemorate the Audi 90 Imsa Gto of 1989. Designed to participate in Trans-Am competitions, it was powered by a 2.2-liter five-cylinder engine capable of delivering 720 hp. A car that is legendary in form and power, with the mechanical one derived from the monstrous Audi quattro Group B, covered in a sleek yet threatening touring car body that recalled the Audi 90 street. But above all a racing car capable of reaching a top speed of 310 km / h, with a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.1 seconds. Not bad for the time.

Pacer Racer

Just like the original Gto, the new concept stands out for its decidedly racing details: eye-catching and sporty aerodynamic kit, flared wheel arches, monobloc racing wheelset with closed rims, side tailpipes and a tapered rear spoiler. The white, black and red livery is exactly the same as that of the 1989 GTO and is embellished with the number ” 40 ”, in honor of the anniversary of the quattro drive. On the front stand out new LED lights, a new hood with ventilation slits and the specific Gto badge. The interior has also been revisited. The Neckarsulm Audi team removed the superfluous and fitted a rear roll cage, Recaro racing seats made of carbon fiber, protective window nets and six-point racing harnesses. Few changes for the center console and for the Alcantara sports steering wheel.

It will not

The technical specifications of the RS6 Gto are not known but it is easy to expect that the prototype will mount an optimized version of the 4.0-liter V8 biturbo of the RS6 Avant. An engine capable of delivering up to 600 hp of power and 800 Nm of torque, more than enough to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and reach 305 km / h of top speed. Having said that, it is likely to remain a flashy exercise in style, the chances of it being produced in a limited series are very remote, especially as Audi has already launched a celebratory car this year such as la TT RS, in a limited edition of 40 pieces. However, honor to the young people who have tried their hand, with the aim of paying homage to the “90” that won seven races in the ’89 championship, led by Hans-Joachim Stuck.
