Audi presents the stylish electric SUV coupe Q4 Sportback e-tron

So far, this is only a concept, but next year it should arrive as the seventh model of the brand with electric drive.

While Audi unveiled the Q4 e-tron electric SUV concept at the Geneva Motor Show last year, today it unveils its sleeker SUV-style version: the Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron. Technically, the cars will be the same, but their shapes will give them a unique character.

The basis of both electric SUVs will be the modular electric platform MEB, but their external dimensions will differ slightly. The stylish Q4 Sportback SUV coupe will be one centimeter longer with a length of 4.60 meters and one centimeter lower with a height of 1.60 meters. However, both models are connected by a wheelbase with a value of 2.77 meters and a width of 1.90 meters.

Dynamic reduction

The most significant design modification of the Q4 Sportback e-tron model is the silhouette, which decreases dynamically towards the stern. The roof line then passes into D-pillars and at the level of the lower line of the windows it opens into a distinctive horizontal spoiler. Compared to the standard SUV Q4, the e-tron not only looks more dynamic, but also has a significantly more elongated impression.

Other design elements follow the tradition of Audi models as well as elements of e-tron electric models. For example, the bow impresses with the traditional octagonal Singleframe mask, which has a closed, structured and almost vertical surface replacing the traditional radiator grille.

The rear of the car attracts with its wide band of lights, which connects the two lamps. Their internal design with the arrow-shaped shape of the LED segments refers to the original Audi Q4 e-tron concept. In addition, the Sportback also has a diffuser with horizontal slats and an illuminated e-tron logo in the middle of the rear bumper.

When viewed from the side, in addition to the dynamically sloping roofline, the muscular raised fenders, a traditional feature of Audi models that refers to the legendary quattro from 1980, also attract attention. The last interesting detail is the large wheels, which have a diameter of 22 inches.

Another interesting feature of the concept is its color, Kinetic gray. This metallic lacquer with a pearlescent effect changes significantly to green, depending on the angle of incidence of the light. In addition, the body paint, which is painted in a dark gray shade, contrasts with the body paint.

Space from a higher segment

Although the dimensions of the Q4 & Q4 Sportback e-tron twins fall into a compact class, thanks to a wheelbase of 2.77 meters, they should offer the spaciousness characteristic of models at least one class higher. This is also due to the electric drive, which freed up more legroom for the front and rear passengers.

The impression of generous space should be enhanced by the color combination of the interior. The upper parts are dominated by light warm shades, while the carpet on the floor is black. The carmaker also used the materials used with regard to the long-term sustainability of the Q4 & Q4 Sportback models.

For example, the floor covering is made of recycled materials and chrome-plated decorative frames have replaced surfaces with high-quality multi-layer coating. The four seats with integrated headrests are upholstered in Alcantara, processed in a manufacturing quality, which is decorated with double stitching with thick yarn.

The ergonomic specialty of the concept is the center console, which is designed as a generous storage space. Instead of the traditional controls, there is a horizontal surface in front of it, into which the mode selector buttons are embedded. The door will then please with a special bottle holder in the upper part.

From a technological point of view, the interior will be pleased with the traditional Audi virtual cockpit digital instrument panel, which should complement the large-area transparent display (HUD) with augmented reality function. In the middle above the center console is a 12.3-inch touch screen infotainment, which is slightly turned towards the driver. Below it is a bar with air conditioning control.

Economical and sporty

The Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron concept is equipped with a sports version of the electric drive, which means an electric motor on both axles. The optimal torque distribution is then controlled by an electrical control unit that issues commands in a fraction of a second.

To achieve maximum efficiency, the Q4 Sportback e-tron concept relies primarily on a rear synchronous electric motor with a permanent magnet. However, if the driver needs higher power, or the car system detects a possible wheel slip, he will also connect the front asynchronous electric motor. This happens even before the wheels slip.

The rear electric motor offers a maximum output of 150 kW and a maximum torque of 310 Nm, while the front electric motor has a maximum output of 75 kW and 150 Nm. The entire drive system then achieves a combined output of 225 kW.

The power supply is provided by a set of batteries with a capacity of 82 kWh located in the floor. Due to low aerodynamic air resistance (cx 0.26), optimized recuperation technology and a comprehensive battery temperature control system, including a heat pump with CO2, the Q4 Sportback e-tron will offer a range of up to 450 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. The batteries support charging with an output of up to 125 kWh, thanks to which it is possible to obtain 80% of the total capacity within 30 minutes on a sufficiently powerful charger.

Thanks to the 510 kilogram batteries in the floor, the Q4 Sportback e-tron concept also offers a low center of gravity, which significantly contributes to better handling. The weight of the car is then distributed between the axles in a ratio of 50:50. The front wheels are suspended on McPherson struts, while at the rear is a multi-link axle. Both axles are equipped with an adaptive shock absorber

Electric offensive

The Q4 and Q4 Sportback e-tron models are part of the Audi electric offensive, which wants to offer more than 20 electric models by 2025. At the same time, it also expects that about 40% of sales at that time will fall on electrified models. The offer of electrified models should cover all important market segments – from compact to luxury class.
