AT&T sells Crunchyroll anime streaming service to Sony for $ 1.18 billion

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) is selling the Crunchyroll streaming service to Funimation Global Group LLC of the Japanese entertainment and electronics group Sony Corp. The unit is bought by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

The Funimation Global Group is in turn a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. and the subsidiary Aniplex Inc. of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc.

Crunchyroll is an anime direct-to-consumer service in the WarnerMedia segment of US telecommunications and media group AT&T Inc. with more than three million paying subscribers.

The unit has a total of 90 million registered users in more than 200 countries and regions and offers the distribution of mobile games, manga and event merchandise.
