Atsimo Andrefana – Cattle swarms infected with virus

Rift Valley fever attacks herds of animal species in the Atsimo Andrefana region. The disease first affected zebus and goats in the district of Ankazoabo, since February 28. A foreign site specializing in talks about it and specifies that the Malagasy health authorities have notified the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) that the fever started with ten cattle and one hundred and ten goats in a herd of three hundred animals and in twenty two sheep in a population of one hundred and fifty-four in Ankazoabo South.

“The diagnosis was confirmed by molecular biology technique (RT-PCR) at the Pasteur Institute in Madagascar” underlines the site. The regional livestock service Atsimo Andrefana confirms the disease and even specifies that the fever of the Rift Valley also affects herds of the district of Toliara II in the communes of Soahazo, Analamisampy and Ankililoaka.

Fever is explained by the technician as a zoonosis caused by a virus and manifested by a wave of unexplained abortions and a drop in milk production. The virus can also be transmitted to humans. Awareness campaigns on the non-marketing of meats from zebus and sick goat species as well as milk from sick cows or goats have started.
