ATP 250 Atlanta – Benoît Paire forced to retire in the 3rd set of his match against Emil Ruusuvuori

Benoît Paire will not go further than the round of 16 in Atlanta. The Frenchman, 49th in the world at ATP, was forced to give up three games from the end of his duel against Emil Ruusuovori, Thursday evening in France, but at the end of the afternoon in the United States, in Georgia.

This is important because the Frenchman, muddy, seemed to be indisposed the more the match progressed. He gave up when he was trailing 3-0 in the last act, and he was serving. Moments before giving up, he had spoken with the match supervisor.

The end of the 2nd set changed everything

Good tennis, good resistance but no achievement for Paire

Paire had however unrolled his tennis during a good part of the match. At the controls of the meeting, he was in control of the situation, especially behind his entry, for almost two rounds. His service was particularly marvellous.

After missing two break points at 3-3, he ended up folding behind his commitment, at 5-4 Ruusuovori, after a gargantuan game that changed everything. First heroic to save three set points, then a fourth, L’Avignonnais missed three balls 5-5 and it cost him dearly. First the second act, then the match.

Now in the quarterfinals, Ruusuovori, current 78th in the world, will face Cameron Norrie, easy winner of Nick Kyrgios (6-1, 6-4). For his part, John Isner emerged victorious from the 100% American duel against Jack Sock (7-6, 6-4).

Sinner released by O’Connell

The Italian also stuck at the gates of the quarter-finals. He was dominated in two sets by the Australian Christopher O’Connell (7-6, 6-4). For the 132nd in the world, 27, this is the best result of his career. He had never reached the quarters of an ATP tournament before.
