Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – In the search process for a nuclear repository, the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining (LGRB) has now published a statement for possible locations in Baden-Württemberg. According to Jörg-Detlef Eckhardt, head of the LGRB, said on Monday, the regional conditions must be carefully considered and the geoscientific data now available must be carefully examined. Among other things, his authority referred to the Federal Association for Final Storage (BGE) on calculation models according to which ice ages will prevail in the distant future and could have an impact on a repository in the southwest.

In September last year, the BGE listed 90 sub-areas nationwide, all of which could be suitable for storing radioactive waste. According to this interim report, four of them are located in the southwest, cover almost half of the state and extend over 39 districts and urban districts. “From a technical point of view, the BGE’s interim report appears understandable,” said Eckhardt.

The repository is to be built underground in salt, clay or crystalline, i.e. above all granite. The location should be found in 2031. In Baden-Württemberg only the Lake Constance district, the urban districts of Karlsruhe and Mannheim and the districts of Lörrach and Tübingen are out of the question.
