Atalanta missed a great opportunity to collect their first three points in a new edition of the UEFA Champions League by drawing goalless at home to Arsenal.
A bittersweet result for the Italian team, as they had the opportunity to win with a penalty kick that Mateo Retegui missed on two occasions.
In a match that had few emotions from the start and that had its most dangerous action in the first 10 minutes with a free kick from Bukayo Saka that was saved with just one hand by Marco Carnesecchi and rejected in the second instance by the same goalkeeper after a counterattack by Thomas Partey.
Minutes later, Kai Havertz made his way into the area and came close to opening the scoring, but his shot went wide of Carnesecchi’s goal.
At the start of the second half, the referee signalled a foul by Partey on Ederson, but after a VAR review, this infringement was awarded as a penalty to Atalanta.
The opportunity fell to Mateo Retegui, who was unable to convert the penalty into a goal, as goalkeeper David Raya saved his shot and subsequent counter-attack with a header to keep the score at zero.
Juan Guillermo Cuadrado was one of the most insistent on behalf of the Goddess, but he could not do more to change the final score.
