They’ve been in a bubble for a little over a year. At the maternity hospital in Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), midwives remain vigilant to protect mothers from Covid-19.
After a busy year 2020 with the birth of 2,492 children, the pressure has come down again in January 2021. “Strangely, we did not expect a drop in births,” explains Valérie Rigal, midwife senior manager of the Woman-Child pole.
In recent weeks, activity has been well supported in the maternity ward. “We give birth to babies from deconfinement, and there are many of them,” says Valérie Rigal.
Seven patients hospitalized for Covid-19
The health protocol is always reinforced in the health establishment. When they enter the delivery room, mothers must answer a questionnaire and be tested if there is any doubt from the healthcare team.
“From the start of the health crisis, we reorganized ourselves, the teams are tired but have shown unfailing solidarity”, underlines the midwife.
Alone seven maternity patients have been hospitalized with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.
Only fathers can visit newborns and mothers.
We strongly recommend that mothers do not receive too many visitors when they return home, they are still fragile and more at risk.
According to the midwife of Chartres, it is still too early to make conclusions on the impact of the spring 2020 confinement on the birth rate.
