Twenty-five-year-old Geoghegan Hart entered the final stage at the same time as Hindley, who started in a pink jersey. In the decisive ending, however, he clearly defeated the Australian peer and Giro won after completing almost 3,500 kilometers with a lead of 39 seconds. At the same time, none of them has finished better than 20th in the Grand Tour.

“It’s bizarre to be honest. I didn’t even imagine this in my wildest dreams when the Giro started in Sicily almost a month ago. I’ve dreamed all my career that one day I’d be in the top ten or maybe even the top five in a race like that. I think that it will take me a while to spend it, “said excited Geoghegan Hart at the finish.
Hindley was reconciled to second place. “What can I say, I’m quite disappointed, but at the same time it’s a great result for me to be on stage in Milan. I’m super-proud,” he said. “Even before the start, I knew it would be hard to beat him in the time trial. I put everything into it, I have nothing to regret,” he added.
Ineos celebrates Giru’s second triumph in two years, with Chris Froome winning in 2018. At the same time, the race started disastrously for the stable this year, because after the fall, team leader Geraint Thomas had to resign at the very beginning.
Hindley’s Dutch Sunweb colleague Wilco Kelderman finished third overall. Portuguese Joao Almeida, who rode in a pink jersey from the third day until Thursday’s royal stage, when he was briefly replaced by Kelderman, finally took fourth place.
