At least three universities have already started the academic year in code orange, universities of applied sciences are following code yellow

In principle, higher education in Flanders may start under code yellow, with half-full auditoriums. But the universities of Ghent, Antwerp and Hasselt are already taking stricter measures.

Code orange for the universities, which means that classes are still held on campus, but with less staffing. The capacity of the auditoriums will be limited to twenty percent, which means that many students will be taught online.

“Even then we can offer our students quality education”, says Van Goethem, rector of the University of Antwerp. All practicals can continue, with a distance and a mouth mask.

Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts (N-VA) finds the decision of the various universities particularly a shame for the first-year students. The minister expects that the universities and university colleges will offer contact education to first-year students as much as possible.
