By October, the European Commission expects the EU to allow the use of at least three drugs against covid. By the end of the year, the number of these drugs may reach five, the EC said in a statement.

An evaluation of an additional seven drugs against the new disease will also begin by the end of the year. The commission will draw up a list of 10 possible treatments and will identify the five most promising by June.

The EC is ready to provide 90m euros for drug research and testing, and 40m euros for their production. The Commission looks forward to better research coordination in the search for new COVID treatments.

EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakidis said the commission was negotiating three preliminary agreements for the supply of new drugs. According to her, EU countries are interested in a joint public procurement for supplies. She noted that the European Medicines Agency evaluates 57 drugs against the new disease.

Kyriakidis said 30 percent of adult Europeans have already received their first dose of covid vaccine, and 12 percent are fully immunized. She expected non-EU countries that produce vaccines to export some of the quantities and not to hamper supply chains.

An EC spokesman today evasively answered questions about whether the EU supports the US proposal to drop patents for covid vaccines. He invited journalists to decide for themselves whether to quote EC President Ursula von der Leyen in her statements a few days ago that the EU is not in favor of this approach, and from today that it could consider the proposal of Washington.

He said US authorities had warned the EU that they would propose dropping patents. The spokesman said the issue was controversial and could only be part of action to achieve the goal of vaccinating all people around the world. He said the EU had decided to extend restrictions on vaccine exports until July.
