Initially it was reported that about sixty people were blocked. According to a representative of the Ecuadorian authorities for Risk and Emergency Management, work in the illegal mine in the northwest of the country, near the border with Colombia, has caused a landslide.
The then government of the South American country declared a state of emergency in July 2019 in the context of the fight against illegal mining in the north of Ecuador. According to official figures at the time, some 10,000 people were mined for gold in the region. A criminal network has developed around the illegal mines, which has a lot of other crimes such as murder, forced prostitution, human trafficking, money laundering and smuggling on its head.
