Welcome to the municipality of Kammeltal

The municipality of Kammeltal is beautifully situated in the Swabian baroque corner between the Mindel and Günz valleys in the heart of the Günzburg district. With its 13 districts, the Kammeltal offers numerous and diverse opportunities for young and old in addition to the scenic attractiveness and the resulting opportunities for hiking and cycling. A strong community with many active clubs and a family-friendly environment make life in the Kammeltal very worth living. I would like to invite you to visit our beautiful community.

Thorsten Wick

The name is program

Kammeltal is, how could it be otherwise, in the beautiful valley of the Kammel, which is often also called Kammlach. At times, the small river still meanders through the almost two-kilometer-wide valley, surrounded by gentle, wooded hills. There are wonderful cycling and hiking trails along the river, past a charming landscape with wetlands and many beautiful views.

A thousand years is a long time

The most tangible is the history of the community in Wettenhausen. Even from afar you can see the monastery there. According to documents it was founded in 1030. Today it houses the Dominican Sisterhood. With many events of a spiritual as well as of a secular nature, an active monastery life is led there. In addition to the monastery church itself, the Kaisersaal and the monastery museum are particularly worth seeing. There are some picturesque old buildings to discover around the monastery with its farm buildings. Afterwards, a short walk to Calvary is worthwhile. However, this year this hill with a cloister, beautifully situated in the forest, gained notoriety. Because in an act of senseless destruction, all stations were severely damaged.

The center of the community is in Ettenbeuren

Due to its geographical location in the center of the municipality of Kammeltal, Ettenbeuren was chosen as the seat of administration. Here the youthfulness of the local construct can be seen. Unlike in most towns in the area, the town hall is not in the center but on the outskirts of town. A purely functional building, without ornaments or special features. If you drive through Ettenbeuren, you will definitely notice the “Gasthaus zum Adler”. The listed inn was shut down in 1918, but with its beautiful half-timbered facade it is still an eye-catcher.

Agricultural excursion paradise

From an economic point of view, the municipality of Kammeltal could be described as structurally weak. The districts are more agricultural in the fertile valley along the Kammel. Larger companies are largely looked for in vain. But the places in the association have a pound with which they can grow. The picturesque location is almost predestined to make the area a destination for excursions. This is evidenced by the relatively high density of inns in the districts. And they are quite inventive when it comes to offering tourists interesting options. There is a tree hotel just outside the district of Behlingen. There you can spend your holidays in comfortable tree huts in the middle of nature. A small “holiday village” awaits visitors in Egenhofen. There you can enjoy a romantic break from everyday life in restored circus wagons. With barbecue facilities and the wildly romantic Kammelauen directly in front of the door.

Lively community life with many festivals

In the districts there are still living traditions and many clubs with a long history. And where there are clubs, there is also celebration. In July alone, in addition to the 50th anniversary celebration, there will also be the “Lindenfest” in Behlingen-Ried, the “Dorfplatzfest” in Wettenhausen, the “Fischerfest” of the Kammeltaler Fischerfreunde, the “Beinhartfete” in Ettenbeuren and the “Bella Italia” of the Give Fireman Kammeltal. They know how to celebrate and there will be a lot on offer for the holiday guests.

Unusual monument on the edge of the forest

On the former bomb training ground, today’s Waldheim, the Peace Chapel was erected out of gratitude by those returning from World War II. A round building, right on the edge of the forest. With an unusual eye-catcher – the bell tower of the chapel consists of the former observation tower of the training area. The chapel is located directly on the Carl Carstens hiking trail. In 1981, the Federal President at the time planted a peace linden tree there. The path is still a highlight for hikers today.

friendliness and hospitality

Even though the municipality of Kammeltal itself is still young, it offers holidaymakers and day trippers a lot of interesting things. The locals score with friendliness and hospitality and nature speaks for itself anyway. A destination right on the doorstep that leaves nothing to be desired. (ek)
