Asvel gives in at the end in Moscow against CSKA Moscow

The Villeurbannais now have a record of eight wins for ten defeats in the Euroleague.

The Lyon-Villeurbanne basketball players gave in at the end of the game on the CSKA Moscow floor, losing 90 to 83 under the onslaught and precision of Daniel Hackett, on behalf of the 21st day of the Euroleague on Friday evening.

With this tenth setback of the regular season for eight victories, the players of TJ Parker see CSKA escape: the Muscovites totaling twelve successes for eight defeats. In the standings, disturbed by the numerous postponements due to cases of Covid-19 for several weeks, Asvel occupies ninth place, one victory behind Efes Istanbul, the Stambouliotes having however played one match more than Villeurbanne.

Asvel will recover one of its three late Euroleague matches, receiving Monaco (19th day) in its Astroballe hall on Tuesday and then will receive the Red Star of Belgrade three days later for the 22nd day. Before receiving Monaco, the reigning double French champions will go to Antarès on the Le Mans floor in Elite.

Resources to pick up, but…

Friday, Charles Kahudi’s teammates hung CSKA for three quarters, before yielding in the last ten minutes. And even when the gap rose for the first time to twelve points four minutes from time (80-68), the Asvel players found the resources to pick up the score (85-81, 38th), in particular thanks to to the baskets of Marcos Knight (16 points) and Elie Okobo (15 points).

But CSKA proved to be far too precise from three points, Dimitris Itoudis’ players scoring thirteen of their 27 attempts from distance. By scoring 27 points against Asvel, the Italian rear Daniel Hackett crossed the symbolic bar of 2,000 career points in the Euroleague, “a pretty cool accomplishment“, he explained after the game. “But you don’t achieve it alone, you do it with the help of your teammates and I’m happy to have been able to achieve this goal with the CSKA shirt“, he added.
