Astro’s Playroom developer has plenty of ideas, but no DLC or a new part is planned for now

What started as an introductory demo for the PlayStation 4 has grown into something that can become a full-fledged franchise: Astro Bot. The character got an adventure all of its own for PlayStation VR with Astro Bot: Rescue Mission, and on PlayStation 5, the full-fledged game Astro’s Playroom is included for free.

Asobi Team, the developer at SIE Japan Studio responsible for these games, has been praised for the creativity, gameplay and nostalgic elements that go into these games. Especially Astro’s Playroom is a beautiful game in the sign of PlayStation nostalgia and thanks to the good gameplay it tastes like more.

In an interview with Edge tells studio boss Nicolas Doucet that they currently have no plans to expand Astro’s Playroom. It is certainly not ruled out, because according to Doucet it mainly comes down to the popularity of the title. Until now, they have mainly heard the media, but ultimately the consumer is the determining factor in this.

“At this moment in time, there’s no plan for an extension of Astro’s Playroom, but I think it’s going to come down to the popularity of the game. So far we’ve heard a lot from the media, and it’s been very positive, and we’re really, really happy. But a lot of it is going to come down to the consumer experience.”

“I think we need to hear from them too. And that’s going to happen post-launch, once the console is in the hands of consumers. But if the character has popularity, and if it proves that people are really having fun, [an extension or sequel] could be one avenue to follow.”

What he is actually saying is that they mainly want to hear from consumers that they want more Astro’s Playroom. If that sound is vocal enough, then an expansion would be possible, as well as a completely new part, but that remains to be seen.

In any case, no shortage of ideas, because according to Doucet the team has enough inspiration to do new things with the DualSense controller and the other features that the PlayStation 5 has to offer. Although all those ideas are on the table, Doucet adds emphatically that nothing is definitive.

“In Team Asobi we’re always trying to come up with ideas from technology, and so there are lots of things we want to try and do around the controller. And as we make these prototypes, if one of them turns out to be a game idea in its own right, it could end up being a new direction that we take and we’ll run with it. So it could be one or the other, but at this moment in time I don’t really know.”
