AstraZeneca Resumes Covid-19 Vaccine Trials in the UK

The British-Swedish pharmaceutical giant, AstraZeneca, said Saturday (12/9) that it had continued testing the Covid-19 vaccine after receiving the green light from supervisors.

“Clinical trials for the AstraZeneca Oxford coronavirus vaccine, AZD1222, have resumed in the UK following confirmation from the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority that it is safe to carry out,” the company said in a statement.

The pharmaceutical company stopped the trial on Tuesday (8/9) because a volunteer participant fell ill after receiving the experimental drug.

The company issued a statement that day that the trial suspension was “a routine measure, which should be taken whenever a potentially unexplained illness occurs in one of the trials, while it is being investigated, to ensure we maintain the integrity of the trial.”

The AstraZeneca drug is one of nine vaccine candidates in final Phase 3 human trials worldwide.

The company began recruiting 30,000 volunteers on August 31, and the vaccine was being tested in small groups in Brazil and in other South American countries. [vm/ft]
