AstraZeneca: No evidence of increased risk of blood clots

There is no evidence of an increased risk of blood clots in people vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine. Which the company says after examining the data of more than 17 million vaccinees in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The statement comes after several countries suspended administration of the vaccine, due to reports of thrombosis after a shot.

The AstraZeneca study has provided no evidence of an increased risk of pulmonary embolism, thrombosis or acute platelet loss (thrombocytopenia) in any age group, gender, delivery or in any particular country, AstraZeneca said in a press release.

Anxiety

Additional tests with the vaccine have been and are being conducted by the company and European health authorities, and none of those tests are of concern, AstraZeneca said. “There is an increased focus on individual cases due to the nature of the pandemic,” the company said messages about serious side effects.

Up to March 8, 15 reports of thrombosis and 22 of pulmonary embolism have been received, according to the producer. “That is much lower than you would expect in a population of this size and comparable to other approved covid-19 vaccines.”

Denmark decided on Thursday to suspend vaccinations with the AstraZeneca vaccine as a precaution, after blood clots were found in a few cases in people who had received the vaccine. One of them had died. Ireland, Iceland and Norway, among others, followed the Danish example.

Suspend

Other countries decided to suspend the administration of certain deliveries of the vaccine. In response to the death of a vaccinated teacher last Saturday, authorities in the northern Italian region of Piedmont decided to temporarily stop the ABV5811 delivery, writes the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. Previously, the use of another supply was suspended in Italy after two men died on the island of Sicily.

The European medicine agency EMA said no clues that there is a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and cases of thrombosis. In the Netherlands, vaccinations with the AstraZeneca vaccine will continue as usual.

The AstraZeneca corona vaccine can cause an allergic reaction. That should therefore be stated on the package leaflet, according to the EMA earlier this week.
