AstraZeneca Experimental Candidate for the World’s Leading and Most Advanced Development Candidate for AstraZeneca

TRIBUNNEWS.COM,  GENEVA
– The World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist on Friday said the AstraZeneca experimental Covid-19 vaccine (AZN.L) was the world’s leading and most advanced candidate for development.

The British drugmaker has begun large-scale human vaccine trials on a large scale, developed by researchers at the University of Oxford.

This week, AstraZeneca signed the 10th supply and manufacturing agreement.

“Certainly in terms of how advanced they are, the stage in which they are, I think they might be the main candidates,” WHO chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan told a news conference quoted by Reuters.

“So maybe they will get fairly early results.”

Swaminathan said other candidates for the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (MRNA.O) did not lag behind AstraZeneca, among more than 200 candidates, 15 of whom had entered clinical trials.

“We know that the Moderna vaccine will also go into phase three clinical trials, perhaps starting in mid-July, and so that vaccine candidates are not far behind,” he said.

“But I think AstraZeneca certainly has more global coverage at this time in terms of where they conduct and plan their vaccine trials.”

The WHO is in talks with several Chinese producers, including Sinovac (SVA.O), about potential vaccines, as well as with Indian researchers, Swaminathan said.
