Context

The abundant news of coronavirus can be a bit confusing at times. Among the many studies, measurements sometimes lost in the mass information, and progress of treatments, it is not always easy to keep track. This is precisely why we launched Science thread, the scientific news podcast, last November. More recently, a new format, Covipod, has been added to it, in order to keep you informed of the latest news from the Covid-19.

Written and presented by our health journalist Julie Kern, graduated with a master’s degree in infectious disease, this audio pellet is accessible to as many people as possible. It therefore offers you a focus on major news, then an overview of the latest measures, discoveries and solutions to the pandemic. The aim is to provide you with clear and concise answers to help you better understand and follow the evolution of the disease in France and around the world. The hashtag #Coronavirus remains available at any time on Futura to learn more, in depth.

If you follow the news, it could not have escaped you: France has temporarily suspended the vaccine from AstraZeneca until the opinion of the European Medicines Agency which is expected to be released today, March 18, 2021. At the time of recording this podcast, it has not yet been published. The reason for this temporary suspension is the appearance of thromboembolic disorders and the coagulation, in ten European countries. AstraZeneca’s vaccine lot ABV5300 is at the heart of the concerns. France has received around 300,000 doses of the latter, half of which has already been injected. For the moment, there is nothing to link these events to vaccination. This is why this decision is making the teeth of many scientists and doctors cringe. Far from political decisions, let’s take stock of the side effects identified by the ANSM. As of March 4, 2021, 454,545 injections of the AstraZeneca vaccine have been given and 3,013 adverse effects recorded, of which 965 considered to be serious. Women aged 18-49 are the most at risk. The vast majority of side effects are due to the body’s reaction to the vaccine, whether local, such as pains at the injection site, or generalized, such as the onset of what doctors call a syndrome flu-like. The latter is the most common systemic side effect, with 40% of side effects reported. On average two days after the injection, the vaccinated person gets fever, headaches and severe fatigue. These symptoms usually go away a few days later with rest, but may still require time off work. Most of the serious side effects reported are the consequences of this flu-like syndrome, which can cause tachycardia, hypertension or dizziness. The onset of influenza-like illness is not new and is known to scientists and doctors. There is therefore nothing to worry about. What about thromboembolic disorders that everyone worries about? Only one serious case has been identified in France. This is the appearance of Consequences of a … “data-image =” https://cdn.futura-sciences.com/buildsv6/images/midioriginal/4/a/7/4a72bcf5df_50034456_thrombose-dr. jpg “data-url =” https://www.futura-sciences.com/sante/definitions/medecine-thrombose-2857/ “data-more =” Read more “>thromboses multiple (cerebral, portal and pulmonary) in a person with disseminated intravascular coagulation. She had received a dose of the famous batch ABV 5300. (As a reminder, thrombosis is a disease in which small clots blood, called thrombi, can clog the veins and prevent blood from reaching the heart.) This case joins the 30 thromboembolic events recorded in Europe for the 5 million people vaccinated. At the moment, there is no evidence that the AstraZeneca vaccine is responsible, as the number of cases of thromboembolic events in vaccinees does not exceed that of the general population. Although AstraZeneca’s vaccine is more reactogenic than that of Pfizer or Moderna, its benefit / risk ratio is still largely positive. In other words, it is better to get a dose of AstraZeneca vaccine than to catch Covid-19. To learn more about this story, I recommend reading the article ” Is the AstraZeneca vaccine a victim of the precautionary principle? », Already online on Futura.

Elsewhere in the news around the coronavirus.
