Asteroids As Big As London Eye Pass Over Earth Tomorrow

Solopos.com, JAKARTA – The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA asteroid tracker, aka the United States Aeronautics and Space Administration, detected a large space rock that will pass through Planet Earth, Wednesday (17/2/2021) tomorrow. The size is as big as the London Eye, aka the Millennium Wheel, Ferris wheel with observation deck the largest in the world at 135 m.

The asteroid, named 2021 BS3, is estimated to measure 110 m or the equivalent of the iconic London Eye and longer than a football field. NASA says the asteroid will be closest to Earth at exactly 1.58pm GMT. However, technically this asteroid is categorized as being in a close distance, it is actually about 0.04423 Astronomical Units (AU) from Earth. This is equivalent to the average distance between our planet and the Sun or about 4,111,435 miles.

Despite these impressive proportions, there is nothing to be afraid of as data from the Center for the Study of Near Earth Objects (CNEOS) reveal that the ancient ruins will safely sail through our world. As well as the asteroid’s size and distance, NASA experts were also impressively able to provide accurate velocity estimates.

Using their latest technology, the space agency ensures that the asteroid body can travel at a speed of 10.37 km / s or 23,197mph. In comparison, this asteroid is extremely fast, firing into space ten times faster than a bullet fired from a pistol. But such speeds are actually normal in extreme space environments.

The destruction of dinosaurs

Here, a lack of friction, combined with a seemingly impossible celestial force, can accelerate objects like asteroids to unexpected speeds. The imminent arrival of BS3 in 2021 in Earth’s cosmic environment coincides with the publication of research identifying an asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Harvard University asteroid experts think they now understand how the massive chunk of space rock was responsible for the Chicxulub crater that killed the giant reptile. “The solar system acts as a kind of pinball machine. Jupiter, the most massive planet, kicked a long period comet into an orbit that makes it very close to the sun, “said the experts. Express UK, Tuesday (16/2/2021).

Meanwhile, he explained that long-period comets came from a region of the solar system called the Oort cloud. In a solar grazing event, the part of the comet that is closer to the sun feels a stronger gravitational pull than the part that is further away, producing tidal forces across the object.

“You get what’s called a tidal disruption event, in which a large comet breaks up into smaller pieces. And most importantly, on the way back to the Oort cloud, there is a greater likelihood that one of these fragments hit Earth, “said the experts.
