Billa, Merkur and Penny make an urgent appeal to the citizens: the markets are still open, but should not be visited from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
One hour protection period
According to the Ministry of Health, the risk groups include people aged 65 and over and people with chronic previous illnesses. Billa, Merkur and Penny want to protect these risk groups as much as possible and therefore asks all customers to do the shopping outside the one-hour window in order to protect especially older people.
Voluntary recommendation
“I would like to appeal to the cohesion and solidarity within Austria. Please give the elderly and particularly vulnerable people in our society the right to go shopping between 8 am and 9 am,” said Marcel Haraszti, CEO of Rewe. The recommendation is voluntary and has no effect on opening hours, the branches are still open as usual.
