Inspectors of the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) this week have identified five new cases of African swine fever (ASF) in the feral pig population in Latvia, according to information published by the FVS.

Infection with ASF was detected in five wild boars during the last working week – from 10 to 14 August Kuldiga district in Gudenieki parish. Consequently, in the wild boar population in Latvia, ASF has been detected in a total of 221 wild boars in 103 parishes of 47 counties this year.
ASF was first registered in Latvia in June 2014 for three wild boars a few meters from the Belarusian border. It is a very dangerous disease and the entire herd of domestic swine in which the disease has been diagnosed must be slaughtered.
The FVS is a state administration institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture, which performs state supervision and control in the food chain and veterinary medicine sector.
