Ascent / descent: Ligue 1 will have to make the right choice

Like a blow from the club. Tuesday, shortly before 4 p.m., Edouard Philippe ratified the end of the 2019-2020 season of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2.

Slapping with a firm hand the possibility envisaged by the Professional Football League in recent weeks, namely to resume the championship on June 17 in camera, and finish it on July 25. It is clear that Ligue 1 will have to review its copy.

In mid-May, during a general assembly, the LFP will have the heavy task of deciding between three scenarios to determine its final ranking. Will PSG be crowned champion? Who will be relegated to Ligue 2? Which clubs will fly to Europe? So many questions that the League will answer by choosing the option it deems the most fair.

The white season swept away

We already know that the idea of a white season with no ascents or descents is to be ruled out since UEFA summoned the European championships to privilege “sporting merit”.

Another element to take into account, the League had considered an option with three ascents / descents in the event that dams could be organized. However, it no longer seems valid with the cessation of competitions, which would force the body to opt for an option with two ascents / descents. The qualifying places for the Europa League usually allocated by the national cups should be allocated to the 5th and 6th in the championship.

Which scenario to choose?

In France, three tracks have been mentioned and offer different outcomes:

Scenario 1 : the classification is established thanks to a performance index which takes into account all matches played. This index is obtained by dividing the number of points by the number of matches played.

In this case, PSG and OM would go directly to the Champions League while Rennes would go through the 3rd preliminary round. Lille, Reims and Nice would reach the Europa League. For their part, Amiens and Toulouse would be relegated and Nîmes potentially saved by the cancellation of the dam.

Scenario 2 : the classification is stopped on the last day disputed by all the clubs, ie the 27th for Ligue 1 and the 28th for Ligue 2. Only changes in this configuration compared to the first, Reims and Nice would lose their European place for the benefit of Lyon and Montpellier.

Scenario 3 : the classification is frozen after the first matches. In this case, Paris, Marseille and Rennes would go to C1. Lille, Reims and Nantes would enter the Europa League and Toulouse and Nîmes would go down to Ligue 2.

In all three scenarios, Lorient and Lens would go up to Ligue 1.

Each president will obviously have his own position on the issue. There is no doubt that Jean-Michel Aulas, president of OL, and Laurent Nicollin, president of Montpellier, will judge the second solution as the most just. What will the LFP say? Elements of response mid-May.
