Coronation Street character Paul Foreman is considering resorting to dodgy dealings after receiving a possible diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Paul has been experiencing problems with his right hand since his involvement in a recent road accident. With no obvious signs of improvement, he was recently told that the strange symptoms may be unconnected to the crash. In next week’s episodes, Paul is pleased to finally be earning money again when he secures a few hours’ work as a kitchen porter at the Bistro.

When Paul attends his appointment with a neurologist, he’s told that he may be experiencing the early signs of MND. Paul is shocked and heads off for a meal with his family, deciding not to tell them the truth for the time being. Once alone later on, Paul tearfully stares at his hand as he considers the upsetting reality of what may lie ahead for him.

Paul’s thoughts turn back to how he can provide for his loved ones. He needs to pay back money owed to his partner Billy Mayhew and wants to keep his promise to help his sister Gemma Winter pay for her wedding.

Paul is intrigued when Nick Tilsley complains to him about the Street’s newest bad boy Damon Hay, explaining that he’s Harvey Gaskell’s brother. Deciding to seek out some of Damon’s criminal contacts, Paul approaches the villain and announces that he hasn’t got long to live, so wants to make some quick cash. Damon hands over details of a man called Kyle, who’s looking for a driver as part of an insurance scam.

Last week, Coronation Street revealed that Paul’s diagnosis of MND will be formally confirmed later in April. As there is no cure for the life-shortening condition, the tragic storyline will run for many months but will ultimately lead to Paul’s death.

Actor Peter Ash who plays Paul recently said, “When Paul is told that they’ll be testing for MND, he doesn’t really know what that is. He has to ask a few questions. The consultant explains that Paul is experiencing symptoms which could be MND. From that point, Paul just goes into shock.”

“Paul is not looking positively on it at all. He thinks that he’s got it, even though he hasn’t been told that for definite yet. As far as Paul is concerned, this is what it is – it makes sense based on the symptoms he’s experiencing. Once it sinks in, it turns his whole world upside-down.”

Coronation Street is working on Paul’s storyline with support from the MND Association, which focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for people affected by motor neurone disease.
