As a result of energy drinks, this 21-year-old man has heart failure

Suara.com – A 21 -year -old man experienced heart failure the result of always consuming four energy drink totaling 500 milliliters per day for two years.

This case was written in the journal BMJ Case Reports which was published on Thursday (15/4/2021) yesterday.

The man, who was not identified, checked himself into St Thomas’ Hospital, London, due to shortness of breath which had worsened for four months and experienced weight loss.

According to Live ScienceHeart failure occurs when the heart muscle cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, whereas kidney failure occurs when the kidneys are unable to properly filter waste products from the blood.

His kidney failure was caused by an old but undiagnosed condition called chronic obstructive uropathy. This occurs when urine can’t flow properly through the urinary tract and returns to the kidneys.

Meanwhile, his heart failure was concluded as a result of consuming high levels of energy drinks, although doctors could not prove it with certainty.

A number of previous studies have linked energy drink consumption with cardiovascular effects, including increased blood pressure and abnormal heart rhythms.

After 58 days in the hospital, the man was allowed to go home and was given several prescription heart medications. He also stopped drinking energy drinks completely and his heart function improved considerably.

Doctors said the man did not need a heart transplant at this time. However, he will likely need a kidney transplant in the future.

“Clear warning should be given about the potential cardiovascular harm from consuming large amounts of energy drinks,” concluded the authors of the case study.
