Artist Ildze Ose: I left my job, sold my valuables just to make my dream come true in Switzerland. I did it! – In harmony – Egoiste

Once, while visiting friends in Switzerland, she visited the international art exhibition “Montreux Art Gallery”, where she wanted to exhibit her works. It wasn’t just a short-lived idea, it was her dream. And Ildzi did not think about it for two years until she decided to go full bank!

There are people who persistently follow their dreams – set a goal and go for it, sometimes even boldly. Ildze Ose, an artist from Talsi, is definitely fulfilling her dreams! This week – from October 23 to 25 – the furniture and design exhibition “Furniture & Design Isle 2020” will take place in Ķīpsala, where you will be able to see Ildze’s works.

In the interview, the artist Ildze Ose talks about painting and fulfilling daring dreams.

You come from a medical family. How come you are an artist?

Ever since I remember myself, I always knew who I would be and what I would do. I knew that my life would be about art and design. Mom told me that even when I was a baby, when I first picked up a pencil, I drew a straight line instead of a scratch. (Laughs.) And then, naturally, both the art school and the studios in the field of design followed.

How did your journey to a dream come true in Switzerland?

It was so daring. I probably wouldn’t do anything like that with my mind right now! (Shut up.) Although you never know! (Smiles.) It took a lot of paintings and money to be able to exhibit at the Montreux Art Gallery, because there is not only a competition to pass, but also a small participation fee.

So I put a lot on one card at the time – I quit my job, painted for more than six months, sold everything I had, even borrowed money and went to Switzerland full of determination!

And did the courage justify it?

Yes, definitely yes! I passed the competition and exhibited my works at the Montreux Art Gallery for two years in a row. After the first show, I also decided to stay in Switzerland unplanned, because I was offered to look after the house in the mountains. It was a perfect combination for me as an artist at that time – to live and paint in such an inspiring environment. I gave in to what life plays. I stayed in Switzerland for two years and participated in exhibitions, because painting was my main occupation.

How was your life in Switzerland in a mountain cottage?

It was interesting! I was inspired not only by the mountains, cows and flowers there, but also by the fox, who considered me his friend and came to me every day. (Laughs.)

And although it’s very atypical, I have a very close relationship with foxes, and I really like them. In the paintings of that time I had quite a lot of foxes.

How do you feel in a society with a different standard of living than in Latvia?

Living in a so-called high society was a very valuable and enjoyable experience. I saw and learned more not only about investing in art, but about attitudes towards life and money in general. Although I really liked it there and will probably return one day, I am still a house person – I like living in Latvia.

When you return to Latvia, do you still have a connection with Switzerland?

Yes, because a couple of galleries still have my works. I had a lot of acquaintances and friends there. I also had the opportunity to meet and build friendly relationships with well-known people around the world, such as Nestlé board member Petraea Heynike and the Swedish aristocrat Gunilla von Post, who was John Kennedy’s favorite and has also written a book. I am connected with Switzerland by art, nature and people.

What inspires you more – Swiss or Latvian nature?

Nature. Nature in general both there and here in Latvia. From the very beginning, my paintings were dominated by flowers, animals, birds, and I do not intend to change that. I have painted a lot of flowers – tulips, roses, dahlias, daffodils, poppies, magnolias, water lilies, lotuses, but I am still waiting for me to have a painting with anemones as well. In Switzerland, of course, I paint a lot of their cows.

How is your creative process going?

It all starts with the study of nature. I photograph it, research it and look for inspiration. Part of the images are real, part – my fantasy. It is important to me that the composition is balanced in the paintings, so I never paint without a sketch. The duration of a painting depends on both the size of the work and the duration of the sketch, because quite often it takes me the most time to create a sketch.

On average, the painting tops during the day. There are also bigger and more time-consuming works, but I never spend more than a week on one painting.

You paint large format paintings. What has been the biggest?

The largest and most time-consuming is definitely the painting “Montreux Riviera” with poppies, which I paint in Switzerland. Its size is 1 x 1.5 m. In general, the creative process at it lasted a week. This job has been the only one I found emotionally difficult to sell because I had invested a lot of time and effort into it. This was especially important to me!

Since I have studied design, it is also felt in my works. Art and design meet there. My works have a distinct structure, graphic articles with images and forms of nature, as a result of which the works are in the style of magical realism. And they are dominated by soft, harmonious tones.

Do you know how far in the world your paintings have “traveled”?

Yes, and I have met almost every person who has bought my paintings in my life. It’s a special feeling. I know that my works have reached art lovers in England, America, Australia, Austria, France, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Thailand. In addition, my works have also been chosen by the family of Fanny Smith, the Swiss Olympic champion in freestyle skiing, and the Australian singer Jamie Lee Wilson or JVMIE, who is of course very happy!

How is your daily routine going now?

On a daily basis, I work as an environmental designer in Talsi municipality. In my free time I paint, and my desire to paint is only growing. Now I have a different experience than a few years ago when I went to exhibit works in Switzerland for the first time.

I have no shortage of ideas and big goals.

At the moment, I am pleased to have entered the TOP 30 most viewed artists on the Paris online gallery platform “Singulart”. It definitely gives you the confidence to go ahead to reach new goals again!
