Developers from the American University of Washington made a prototype of a test strip with a label GlucoScreen, which will make it possible to diagnose the current blood sugar level via a smartphone. The accuracy of the evaluation is the same up to the limit value of 125 mg/dL as with separate glucometers. The whole solution uses slightly modified but otherwise commonly available test strips, a mobile application and an LED on the back of the phone. Its equipment or brand does not matter.

A drop of blood is taken with a lancet, i.e. in a completely standard way, but the evaluation is already provided by a smartphone. A test strip is glued to it ahead of time, which also has additional circuits that transmit data to the smartphone using simulated touches on the display.

The GlucoScreen application uses artificial intelligence to process this data, evaluate it and then display the result of the test on the display, which is calculated from the number of touches and the speed at which they follow each other. The user will then learn whether he falls into the risk area of ​​so-called prediabetes. At the same time, it is a precursor to the much more serious type 2 diabetes. However, the test strip together with the application can also diagnose diabetes directly.

Artificial intelligence and supporting application

Soon we won’t need any special meters to measure glucose at home, but just a phone will suffice. And even the additional circuits on the test strip themselves are not financially demanding. The test strip does not use any battery because it does not need to communicate via energy-intensive Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies. The phone doesn’t even matter, it just needs to have an LED light on the back and a capacitive touch screen.

If necessary, it is thus possible to test a large group of people at once, using test strips that arrive, for example, in mailboxes. In addition, the mobile application itself navigates you step by step during the measurement. However, there is only a prototype in the world for research purposes. GlucoScreen will need several clinical studies to become a certified medical device. In addition, the production and distribution of test strips must also be resolved, which will further delay the commercial launch.
